Ironing out the details – Ironman 70.3 Raleigh

June 1st. is almost here.  My first ever endeavor into an Ironman event.  My first relay, too.

Two weekends away, the Ironman 70.3 Raleigh returns for the second race.  The inaugural last year was a huge success.  I think the only real complaints I saw were weather related.  It was hot that day.  By the time you swim, then bike, the half marathon finish was in the heat of the day.  No doubt it will be hot again this year.  I mean, having a race here in June you can count on one thing, if nothing else.  It will be hot!

You heard me right though when I said relay.  I will only be doing the running portion.

I put my name out there to find a swimmer and a cyclist, or for them to find me.  Luckily two young women from western North Carolina with roots here in Raleigh will be my partners for the Ironman Relay.  Having just secured the team, ironing out the details now is the first order of business.

We will meet up (for the first time) at the Expo two weeks from tomorrow.  We will grab our gear, and attend an athlete meeting where we will get all of the important details about the race.  I will be racing with a team for the first time, and really on blind faith.  Luckily this partnership has come together just in time.

I am looking forward to being a part of a team, and competing that day!  It will truly be a unique experience.  Who knows, We may even get a medal for our efforts.

All American Marathon -Race Recap

A few days removed now from the inaugural running of the All American Marathon, I am still trying to wrap my thoughts together into a meaningful and impactful review.  The moments from start to finish are still so very clear in my mind.  So many moments that were memorable, so much satisfaction in completing this race.  If you are a frequent runner or racer, I am sure you have felt the same way I feel at some point.  Sometimes you run races, and they are just that.  A race.  It might be well organized, it might be well attended, it may offer tons of great swag, an awesome medal etc..  You walk away from the race however, feeling sort of ho hum about it.  This race was not that kind of race.  At all!  This race made an impact on me.  Memories that will linger on in my mind forever.  That is the kind of race I love to run, and because of that will surely return to run this race again.

Race morning was an early one.  Actually, one of the earliest.  I got up at 3am.  On four hours of sleep, I bolted for the coffee maker when I walked downstairs.  After a few cups, I made sure that my son was up, and took my shower.  This event also included the Mike to Mike Half Marathon, which would be my son’s second race at this distance.  We got ready, and left the house just after 4:30am, for the hour long drive to Fayetteville.  At that time of morning, traffic was pretty nonexistent so we arrived right on schedule.  I knew where I wanted to park, but had to ask one of the numerous policemen how to get there.  Road blocks, and blue lights were everywhere.  A quick detour of a few blocks, we parked at the courthouse.  Probably about a five minute walk to the race start.

Plenty of time left until we had to head to the starting line, we donned our gear, and readied the bag for bag drop.  A few minutes before 6am we walked over to Festival Park, where the race was starting.  We arrived, and found plenty of space to move around.  Even with over 3,000 runners, Festival Park was an accommodating starting area.  We had to ask where bag drop was, which was not really conveniently located.  Normally I don’t use a bag drop, but since this was a point to point race, and because my son would be finishing about two hours before me, we had to use it.  That way he would have a change of shirt, and his phone at the finish for me to communicate with him via text where I was on the course.

We lined up.  We just sort of made our way into the sea of runners, and tried to position ourselves between pacers that were running our approximate goal pace.  Note to organizers… Pacing signs need to be bigger next year, and a corral start should be used to ease congestion.  The start and first mile were pretty tight.  Announcements were made, and my first sighting of Meb Keflezighi on the stage as he wished runners good luck just minutes before the race began.  The National Anthem, then Ready, Set, and a boom start from a military howitzer artillery gun, and we were off.  An inspirational start.

Dylan and I were off.  He quickly took the lead, and I just tried to follow as we weaved our way through the sea of runners.  I kept my eyes on his blue shirt so that I wouldn’t lose him.  Our plan was to try to run together as much as possible until the split of the courses at mile 9.  I finally caught up to him after about a mile.  We circled Market House, and wove around the town center to Morganton Road.  The beginning of this course is hilly and a big challenge.  Right from the start.  As we made our way up, and up and up, I remembered this exact portion of the race route from the only other race I’ve run in Fayetteville a few years ago.  Run for the Red 10k.  Back then I never even dreamed I would be back in Fayetteville running a marathon.

About four miles in on a tough uphill section, Dylan slowed down a bit.  Now on the All American Freeway, the road that leads into and out of Ft. Bragg, this relatively flat section lasts about five miles.  I felt good.  Dylan was behind me, and slowly but surely, every time I turned around to find him he was falling further back.  Eventually I couldn’t see him anymore.  We passed a section here that was very inspiring,  Wear Blue to Remember, tons of American Flags and picture posters of Ft. Bragg’s fallen service members.  Quite touching.  I saluted as I passed, and said a prayer for those servicemen and women who keep us safe.

On course aid/water/nutrition stations were abundant at this event.  Every other mile for the first ten miles, and then every mile after that. It was truly amazing, and the most course support I have ever seen at a marathon.  So well done, and each and every station was loaded with volunteers.  To all of you, I say thank you!  You were extremely supportive, and vocal.  I appreciate you more than you know.  Generation UCan was the lead nutrition partner on the course, and the reason that Meb was at this race.  What a great product, it really kept my energy up for the duration of the race.

As the courses split at mile nine, as always, the marathon route really became less traveled.  I found myself turning back one last time to see if I could give a final wave to Dylan, but still didn’t see him.  I was now anxious to hear from him to see how he finished.  Now on the Army Base, I felt privileged to get to see where all of the service men and women work, and live.  There were Army vehicles and a few troops all along the rest of the route.  Some were playing music, others just offering encouragement.  We were running in their house now, so I thanked them all as I ran past them.  There were many course signs offering support from the race organizers and troops along the route as well.  My favorite one, I passed just before the half way point.  The sign read, “When the President dials 911, the phone rings at Ft. Bragg”.  I thought it was awesome!

As the race route thinned of runners, I felt pretty good.  My hamstrings were holding up.  I was able to keep pace, even though I was sore.  Actually really sore at points, but keeping my thoughts on the troops, and enjoying the experience were more important.  Race day temperatures were rising.  We started the race at about 55, and with a beautiful, almost cloudless sky, the a North Carolina sunshine was warming up the race course quickly.  Thankfully there was a nice breeze every now and then, but it was really quite warm.  I can only assume that by the time I reached 13.1 miles, temperatures had to by then be in the mid 60’s and rising.  I was sweating a lot, especially when running into the direction of the sun.  Having aid stations every mile though was terrific, and much appreciated.  I kept my hydration up.  So much so that I had to use the restroom once on course.

I glided through mid course.  I could hear the propellers of a plane in the distance, and occasionally during my run I could see a Blackhawk helicopter flying over the race route.  Things you normally don’t see during a race.  Running at Ft. Bragg offered many unique experiences that I will remember.  Hearing that plane, I knew I was nearing Pope Airfield.  I saw the transport planes with roaring engines, and had to stop to take a picture.  The photo reminds me of a point in the race that I was just trying to enjoy the serenity, the quiet.  Airfields normally don’t look like this, or certainly are not quiet.  Racing through this section of the course was quiet.

My phone buzzed.  It was Dylan.  He texted me about two hours after the race began.  He had finished in around 1:51:00.  Not as good as his first Half, but considering the hills, a job well done!  He sent me an encouraging text.  “Let’s go Dad”.  I was at mile 18, then 20.  Chugging along.  I could already see the salt stains on my shirt.  I knew, racing my fifth marathon of the year, that I wasn’t going to set any personal records today. I was just trying to enjoy myself, and the run.  It was so amazing.  I felt blessed and encouraged.  It’s still just amazing to me that I can expect my body to hold up when I put it through an experience like a marathon, much less five in five months.  I was enjoying every moment.

The miles passed slower and slower during the 18-21 mile section, and this was the first time that I really felt tired.  My body was aching. I had thoughts like, “how will I ever finish this.”  I found strength though in the tough moments, and realized this was my wall today.  I will push through it.  I found strength in the encouraging words of the volunteers and servicemen and women.  The signs, the cheers.  I needed them.  Except for a 30 second walk break during a monster of an uphill at mile 23, I ran the rest of the way, even when I didn’t want to.  I was determined.  I wanted that sub 4, and even though I had run a marathon just three weeks prior, I wanted to beat that time, too.  I gauged my pace, and was gunning for a finish under 3:54:00.  As I made my way closer and closer to the finish line at Bragg’s Parade Field, I could start hearing cheers become louder and louder.  I knew I was getting closer, and I wanted to finish strong.

I could now see the finish line on the opposite side of the field.  I kept my eyes peeled for Dylan.  I wanted to find him in the crowd of supporters as I ran toward the finish.  There he was, just about 200 yards away.  He cheered as I passed.  I crossed the line in 3:52:25.  I received my medal from a woman in uniform, and I thanked her.  I spent a few minutes catching my breath, then made my way to my son.  He congratulated me, and I congratulated him.  He had already put on one of my flip flops that I had put in the drop bag.  He had a few bloody blisters that he had already had taken care of and wrapped at the medical tent on the field.  This led me to think, for the first time, how my own lingering blister had made out.  It felt a little irritated, but nothing extreme.

The post race festival was great.  Tons of food, vendors and a huge stage for the award ceremony.  We found some shade, and watched the winner and other runners receive awards.  I felt pretty good, just tired.  There were Army vehicles parked on the field.  There was a circle spray painted on the field for paratroopers to land in, as they dropped out of the sky.  Members of the 82nd Airborne unit.  It was the perfect ending to an inspiring and amazing race.  Then we got to meet Meb, winner of the Boston Marathon.  He was so kind, and autographed my race bib and medal ribbon.  He was down to Earth, and it was such an inspiration to meet him.  I will never forget it.  It was an amazing day.  We took a shuttle back to Fayetteville, a race provided amenity.

Top notch event!  Amazing day, and inspiring in every way.  This one was special, very special.  It was not just any old race.  It was well thought out, planned and executed.  Amazing for an inaugural event.  This event will grow and grow, and my hope is to return and run it again and again.

24 hours from now I will be in Fayetteville, North Carolina.  My son and I will have just arrived, and be lacing up for the inaugural All American Marathon and Mike to Mike Half Marathon.  I cannot wait to hit the streets for another race!  Running with my son will be even more fun.

Packet pick up yesterday was a breeze.  No lines, no waits.  All in all, I think if I didn’t ask one question about parking, it would have taken less than three minutes.  The bibs are military themed, here is a photo of both.

Race day temperatures are supposed to be on the warm side tomorrow, so today I will be continuing the hydrating thing.  Lots of water.  I am working today, so I don’t have the luxury of staying off my feet, but I will rest easy tonight after making a carb loading dinner of pasta and chicken.

It will be an very early morning.  The drive will take at least an hour, so we have to be leaving the house at 4:30 am.  Not exactly thrilled about that, but I knew it when I signed up.  No backing out now.

Time to get my game face on.  My race readiness?  We’ll see how the legs hold up.  All I can say is that my hamstrings will enjoy the break, as this is my last marathon until the Fall.

All American Marathon week

I have arrived at marathon week.  Again!

Careful planning, thoughtful short runs, and eating right.  That is my duty this week leading up to the race on Sunday.

The All American Marathon is a new event.  I signed up back in early December, never really thinking that this would be my 5th marathon in five months to start off 2014.  Maybe I’ve bitten off more than I can chew.  Those are the thoughts I’ve had about this race starting the moment I finished my last marathon on 4/13.  Does my body have anything left to give this inaugural event?  So, I need to focus on good mental preparation this week, as well.  Belief! Believe in yourself.  I can do this.  I can get to the finish line, and add this race to my running portfolio.  I think I can, I think I can…..

To all of those runners who lace up and run multiples on multiples of marathons or ultras every year, I salute you.  Luckily I have remained mostly healthy though the last five months.  Really the only issues I’ve had are with my hamstrings.  Having the Summer off to recover, and start a new training cycle for Fall will be a relief.  My body has certainly felt the effects of four marathons the season, and adding a fifth this week, honestly, I am just hoping to get through it without injury.  To enjoy every mile, and to realize that just five short years ago, I was in no shape to even think about running one marathon, much less five in five months.

I will focus on the accomplishment of my body, my legs.  A runners heart is full of hope, desire.  Mine will be full of satisfaction come Sunday at the finish line.  It’s almost time to lace up again, and take on the challenge of a marathon.  This Sunday at the All American, I lace up to push my body further than it has ever been before.  This Sunday I lace up for the love of the sport.  I will succeed, I will endure.

Tarheel 10 Miler – Race Recap

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the location of this amazing race.  By car, this race is about 55 miles from my house.  I have never run it before, and have to ask myself why.  It was an amazing day, incredible race and had an awesome community feel about it.

The Triangle region of NC, encompasses Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.  Geographically forming the shape of a triangle, this area has grown and grown the past 30 years.  In large part, this is due to the Research Triangle Park.  I moved here for work 15 years ago, and have never regretted it.  Chapel Hill is the furthest of the major cities here from where I live.  Maybe that is the reason why I haven’t yet run this race.  I guess it’s that, and the fact that I have run other races in years past on the day of this event.  Last year, for example, the Tarheel Ten Miler was on the same day as the Blue Ridge Marathon which I ran in Roanoke, VA.

Deciding to give this race a chance this year, I was thoroughly impressed.  My only pet peeve about the race was that they do not offer race morning packet pick up.  That is something that is really annoying to me.  I won’t banter on and on about it, but caused me to have to drive an extra 80 miles yesterday, and spend an additional two hours in the car.  Not a fan of that.  I really think that this race could reach a broader runner participation if they offered same day bib pick up.  My two cents.

With that said, parking was a complete breeze on the campus of UNC.  I did get held up in traffic for about 15 minutes, but I left myself plenty of time for traffic tie ups, so it wasn’t a big deal or have any impact on my race.  I arrived at a parking lot at 6:25am, for the 7:30 start.  Plenty of time to relax, hydrate and make my way through campus to the bell tower where the start of the race was located.

Folks lined up in two lanes.  There is also a 4 mile race, so those folks lined up on the opposite side of the street from us.  After our National Anthem, the 4 miles took off.  Five minutes prior to the 10 mile race.  We started right on time, and made our way through the beautiful campus and streets of a Chapel Hill.  A rolling course, there were certainly challenges.  Many hills, and difficult ones to boot.  Portions of this course reminded me of the Blue Ridge Marathon course, so I tried to summon thoughts from last year to help get me over the hills.

There were 6,200 runners signed up for the two races combined.  The course spread out quickly, and it just didn’t ever feel like there were that many people running.  That is a good thing.  I tried to run my race, and not anyone else’s.  This was very important to me today, as the size of the field could have influenced my pace quite a bit.  I didn’t let it happen.  I actually went out a bit slower than I usually do, but I didn’t have any time goals established in my head other than wanting to be faster than an 8:30 per mile pace.  You see, I was trying to take it easy on myself, and my aching hamstrings.  I have a marathon next weekend, so this race I was just considering my final long run.  No need to hurry, right?  It would be a PR regardless since I had never raced this distance before.  I knew I couldn’t go wrong, other than overdoing it.  I made my way.

I actually didn’t feel that loose this morning, and struggled with stomach issues before I left the house.  I really wasn’t feeling that great those first few miles.  I was instantly amazed though by how pretty the course was.  I’ve never spent much time on the campus at all, so it was really all new to me.  It was beautiful!  We are in full on Spring mode, too, so blooms abounded.  Leaves on all the trees filling in nicely, azaleas in full bloom, dogwoods everywhere.  It was just an amazingly pretty day to run, with clear blue skies, as well.  Temps were in the low to mid 50’s when the race began.

After the 5k mark, I started getting looser.  I guess I was just easing into the race, and not letting anything bother me.  Due to the amount of runners, there was always someone I was passing, or someone passing me.  I got used to it quick.  It’s not like I was out there to win the race, or even try to place in my age group.  I was trying to treat this race like a training run.  I was succeeding.  The course was ultra challenging with hills.  I kept even pace.  At the half way point, I had to remind myself that I wasn’t running a marathon.  I could try to maintain my early pace longer, and probably get away with it.  It’s just been so long since I’ve run a race under 26.2 miles, that this was kind of new territory for me.  Plus the new race distance.  I felt like I was staying competitive, and getting in a good run.

At about the seven mile mark, I started to think about the challenging finish.  It’s called Laurel Hill, and is extremely challenging.  That stretch has gained notoriety for the difficulty of it.  The race actually puts a timing mat at the start of it, and at the end of it, and awards bragging rights for those that conquer it the fastest.  I don’t have my result on that split time yet.  As I got closer to it, I think it was less intimidating to me because I have run some mountainous races like Blue Ridge.  I was hard, don’t get me wrong, but I certainly never walked.  Many people did, or at least took walk breaks.  I passed many folks on this challenging uphill finishing section.

Just after Laurel Hill, is the finish.  A short distance now, with a little weaving into Kenan Stadium, where UNC Football is played.  The finish line comes into view, and it’s a sprint to the finish in front of the crowds of spectators.  It was totally cool to finish in the stadium.  I gave it my best.  I crossed the line, feeling really good.  Happy with my pace, happy with how my hamstrings held up.

As of right now, results are not final.  My preliminary results show me at 377/3797 overall, and 50/244 in AG.  Top 10% finish for a new race, and new distance?  Yep, very happy with that.  I filed around the stadium with other runners, picking up water, banana, pretzels and gummi bears.  Snacks and water were plentiful.  The medal is totally cool, and very unique.  Let me know what you think of it!

Overall it really was an amazing event.  So smooth, well organized.  Even though there were 6,000 plus signed up, I never felt too crowded, or rushed.  It was a nearly perfect day in a Chapel Hill today, and a race to remember.  I walked away today, not sore, not limping, and feeling pretty fresh.  I didn’t leave it all on the course today, but that was never my intent.  I feel like I got a good run in, among thousands of my running friends, and will be ready for the 26.2 next Sunday.  It was a fun event, and I certainly recommend it to anyone considering running it one day.

Big Cottonwood Marathon and Fall Race Planning

Image I’ve done my research.  I’ve looked at the pictures, and runner comments, and course.  This race looks absolutely incredible!  I must sign up, and fast! This race, just outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, is mainly a downhill course.  I have never been to Utah, and this seems like a pretty great opportunity to check out the area and its beauty. Looking at Fall races, and trying to put together a good schedule, a few things have occurred.  First off, I really enjoyed the Asheville City Marathon I ran last September.  I planned on going back, spending race weekend in the mountains and enjoying the Fall foliage.  A few months ago, even though they had already started the registration process for this coming year, they cancelled the event completely, and gave refunds to all that had registered.  This left me with a hole in my Fall schedule.  I also decided (since it’s free to enter) to put my name in the hat for the Chicago Marathon, in October. Distance race planning can be tough.  Making sure you have to funds, travel, new races versus old races, rest time, etc., a lot goes in to the planning schedule.  Summer here is too hot for racing, so I generally get a lot of training miles in.  These training miles in the tough summer heat always leave me well prepared for a great Fall racing season. So…. Options….   Big Cottonwood Full in Utah, mid September. image A week later the Great Smoky Mountains Half Marathon in Tennessee put on by Vacation Races.  These two races, on back to back weekends lead me to think of just taking the entire 12 day stretch off as vacation time from work. October…. Rock ‘n’ Rebellion Half on the 5th, here in Raleigh. Depending on the lottery, maybe Chicago mid month.  Not sure I could afford a trip to both Utah and Chicago in the Fall.  Fun to think about though. Greensboro Marathon on the 18th, followed by the Bull City Race Fest Half on the 19th. ( both of which I am already registered for) November… City of Oaks Half Marathon on the 2nd, with my son.  (Registered already) Not sure if the season will continue after that race.  I have the opportunity to head to Spacecoast Marathon in December, or have always wanted to run Kiawah Marathon, which is also in December.  We’ll have to see how it all pans out.  Race planning is fun, isn’t it?

Rock ‘n’ Roll Raleigh Marathon gets closer

Looking forward to earning this bling on my Birthday!

With only 23 days to go, the inaugural Rock n Roll race here in my hometown is almost upon us.  Fanfare is starting to increase, and I am hearing more and more chatter about the race.  Folks are getting pretty darn excited!  I am, too.  It’s officially Spring now, the trees are starting to bud out, grass is starting to get greener and a marathon looms in the not so distant future.  Pretty exciting things in the air.

Spring is always a great time of year here to get outside and run.  Because of my marathon schedule this year, Raleigh will be my 4th of 2014, I haven’t been running nearly as many training runs over the past few months as in past years.  I have to carefully plan on my next three weeks to make sure I arrive at the starting line in good shape.  I really want to watch my diet, as well.

My last three marathons were essentially flat courses, and this one is not.  I typically do really well on hills, as most of my training runs are all hilly.  Funny enough, I chose to run my last three marathons on flat courses because I thought it would help me get closer to a BQ, but I fell short of that goal at all three.  In fact, my PR is here in Raleigh, on the hilly City of Oaks course.  Maybe the hills are just what I need. Maybe the fact that this marathon is on my 44th Birthday will also be a great encouragement to my race day pace.  I just went back and scoured my pacing at the City of Oaks race last November to see how I approached that race from a pacing standpoint.  I learned a few things that I think will help in my approach to this race.  Certain aspects of the course are similar, so my approach will be similar.  I think the challenge of hills, staying strong on the uphill, and using the downhills to my advantage, may be the key.

In any event, I have a few weeks left to prepare.  It will be a celebration regardless, as it is my sons birthday as well that day.  I hope to see some familiar faces out there on the course in Raleigh, and look forward to exploring the city that I love, by foot, yet again.

Heart Health & Panic

You know that moment when you wake up on your last day of vacation, and it’s almost too depressing to enjoy it?  I’m sure you do.  Knowing that work life and the realities of every day life are blindly tossed back in your face after days of rest and relaxation…  We all know how it feels.  Well, today is not that day!  Right now, this moment, is the beginning of a nice long ten days off in a row.  I haven’t taken this much time off at once in a few years, so this is extra special.  I plan on enjoying every moment.

These past two weeks have been filled with stress.  Mainly a trip to the doctors office for a routine physical, which turned into test after test, and utter messing with my head.  My blood pressure was high, my blood sugar was high, my EKG was abnormal.  My Vitamin D was practically non-existent.  So, more tests put me in a panic.  When a doctor asks if you’ve had chest pains, it really is eye opening.

I have already gone back for an echocardiogram, and more blood tests.  I am on a high dose Vitamin D regime for 8 weeks, and I am waiting on the results of my heart ultrasound.  I just had the echo yesterday morning, so I guess if it were anything real serious I would have gotten a call by now.  My fingers and toes have all been crossed that I am ok.

So, I really need this vacation.  To unwind, and relax.  I have to try not to think about potentially getting bad news while I’m gone, as you see, I get on an airplane tomorrow.  If I get test results on Monday, I will be on the other side of the country.  Let’s just hope all is good, because after my return from the west coast I have a marathon to run.  Quintiles Wrightsville Beach is a week from Sunday, two days after I fly home.  I have have one day to rest, then pack up and drive to the coast the following day for the expo.

Registration closes today on the race.  I’m cautiously optimistic that the doctor will say that it’s ok to run.  The whole thing has just been such an unwelcome surprise and has floored me.  I’m used to bring told that I am in perfect health, that my heart is strong and that I am in great shape for my age.  All of these things coming to light when you least expect it, just so surprising.  Isn’t running supposed to be good for your health?

I have to focus on the positives.

I am heading to the airport tomorrow, and going to enjoy this vacation.  It’s my time, and my time away.  My time to relax, have fun and not be stressed.

The first Fall marathon I have signed up for is about a 70 mile drive from where I live.  The Greensboro Marathon will be run on October 18, 2014.  The second installment of this race will see a brand new course this year.  With the new course, the race logo needs to change.  Maybe they are working on that.  Last year, this race was a point to point race, ending in Greensboro, but starting at Elon College, as seen in the photo.  This years race will be run exclusively in Greensboro.

I am not very familiar with Greensboro, even though it’s not that far away from where I live.  I’ve been there several times on business, but have only run a race there once in the last three years.  In October of 2012 I ran the Cannonball Run Half Marathon there, and from what I remember the area is well equipped with rolling hills.

The course will take runners all over Greensboro, so I look forward to seeing the city on foot.

Much of North Carolina is not flat.  This course looks to incorporate many, many rolling hills and changes in elevation.  Nothing too serious, but looking at the elevation chart, you’ll notice very few flat sections.  You’re either going up or down.  I’m sure it will be much like the Raleigh City of Oaks Marathon, which also has rolling hills and difficult sections along the way.  Here is a look at the elevation chart posted on the website.  www.greensboromarathon.com

Looking at this chart, the gains and loses aren’t big, but looks to be like a challenging run.  This race is put on by Trivium Racing, and it will be my first time running one of their races.  I heard good things about the race last year, and hope to add to the good reviews with one of my own this coming October.

That particular weekend this Fall will bring a huge challenge for me.  I will be running the Greensboro Full on Saturday, followed by the Bull City Race Fest Half marathon on Sunday.  Already looking forward to the challenge.  Check out the website, and join me in supporting another North Carolina race.

New York City Marathon – Busting the budget

Since becoming a serious runner, I’ve always thought about what it would be like to compete in the New York City Marathon.  Originally from upstate NY, it would mean running in my birth state.  It would mean a celebration, running the five boroughs of NYC would be just incredible.

Running the NYCM means a lot more, however.  Mostly I am talking about the costs associated with running there.  For the average person running NY, that means traveling there, staying there, and the race itself.  Is it a dream of mine?  Sure it is.  Big races are a big attraction to most serious runners.  To be a part of such an iconic race would be just a dream come true.  But, what about the costs involved?  My wallet would take a serious punch if I got in,  can I afford it?

Let’s look at some of the reasonable and average costs associated with running this event.

Entry fee: $255

Airfare: $260

Lodging: $600

Ok, so just to get there, stay there and run it would be a minimum cost of $1,115.  A hefty price tag, for sure.

There are extras though….the schwag at the expo, taxis, how about food?  Ok, so I am really just guessing here, but I am thinking the “extras” could cost about $500.

So, for me, it would cost over $1,600 to run the New York City Marathon.  Unfortunately I cannot afford to run this race, but can still dream about it, can’t I?

I would be interested to hear if anyone has run NYCM, and how much it cost you.  It may help me to make decisions in the future.  Thanks in advance.
