It’s go time at Wrightsville Beach

Drove down yesterday afternoon.  About a two hour trip from home, easy highway miles.  Just like that, the Wrightsville Beach Marathon, my 11th 26.2 race, is here.

The expo was really well organized.  Hit that just as I drove into town yesterday.  Got to meet Frank Shorter again, and catch the last informational runner meeting at 3pm.  Nice amount of vendors and giveaways.  I was impressed!

A quick trip over to my hotel, and of course, a trip down to the beach….

I don’t know why, but I have never been to this beach before.  It is really beautiful.  The water even looks blue, as I watched the waves ebb and flow.  I’ve been to NC beaches a bunch, but never this one.  Glad this marathon brought me here to experience it.  I will return, when I have more time to hang out on the sand and in the water.

Ate a nice meal last night, and tried to get to bed early.  The time change from the west coast, the red eye flights home on Friday morning, blame it on whatever you’d like, I found it difficult to fall asleep last night.  That brings me to this moment.  Drinking my coffee on a 51 degree, clear morning, full moon still high in the sky.  It’s going on 4am, and I have to be ready to leave the hotel in an hour.

I feel pretty good.  Was really hoping to run for a BQ today, but for over a month now my hamstrings have been really giving me a lot of trouble.  I took over a week off (vacation) from running to see if the down time would help.  On Friday I ran a 2.5 miler, and the pain was right back with me.  So, who knows.  If I can push through it, and stay relaxed and run well, this may be the day.  Then again it might not be.  I’m just thrilled to be able to run.  With all of my potential health problems over the past few weeks, I should be just saying my thanks, and breathing a sigh of relief that I can even get out on that course today and run.  I am very grateful, and plan on enjoying the day.

I may not get a medal today, but I will be leaving with this awesome looking race shirt.

Ok, focus…. I have a marathon to run

I had such a great time in Las Vegas, but now that I am home, my focus needs to change quickly.

Took a red eye back from Vegas last night, a flight that was supposed to leave at 10:50pm.  That plane had mechanical issues and everyone had to deplane before the cabin doors closed.  Luckily, they found another plane for us, and we were on our way about an hour late.  Landed in Dulles about 7:30, and had to connect back to Raleigh less than an hour later.  We made it, tired and cranky, but we made it.

After picking up the dogs from boarding, and now getting a ton of laundry done, my focus needs to be on packing again.  I leave tomorrow at noon for the coast.  Driving this time.  Two hours down to Wrightsville Beach, NC.  So, as I managed to get in zero running in the past week, I am heading out on a three miler in a few minutes.  Just to make sure I still know how to run.  That is kind of important seeing as I have to run 26.2 miles on Sunday morning.

I will hit the expo tomorrow by 2:30, stay for the 3pm runner meeting, and then go check into my hotel.  From there I may try to squeeze in a two mile shake out run before it gets dark, and then grab something light for dinner.  Race time is very early Sunday.  6:45am, in fact. Hopefully there will not be any rain during the race, but the weather is not altogether looking very promising.  Fingers crossed, yet again.

So, the party, that was Vegas, is over.  Now I have to focus on this marathon.  Wrightsville Beach is my 3rd marathon this year, and my 11th overall.  Can’t wait to run this event for the first time.  I hear it is just supposed to be fantastic!

Marathon #11 – 2 weeks away

Two weeks from right now I will be running the Wrightsville Beach Marathon down at the coast.  I’ve been there a few times before, back when the kids were young to touch our toes to the sand and play in the surf.  This time is a whole different ball of wax.  26.2 miles all over this pretty coastal town In Wilmington, NC.

Recovery from the Hilton Head Marathon three weeks ago has been a tough go.  I was much more sore after this race than in previous marathons.  I don’t really know why.  Well, I guess I do.  More than likely because I have already run two marathons this year.  As I head toward one marathon a month for the first five months of 2014, next on the list is back to the beach.  I have been able, over the past ten days, to really start getting into a groove again with my running, and pacing.  Several shorter runs have been progressively successful.  The pace is building back, and the legs are feeling stronger with each run.

It’s no small feat to run a marathon, so I am trying to keep the miles going, but not overdo it.  So, as I look to the final two weeks leading up to this race I have a week of work, then a week of vacation.  I can do it!  I will make it.  This week I prepare more physically, and the following week more mentally.  If the body holds up, I plan on trying to get a Boston Qualifying time at this race.  It’s flat, it’s fast.  I’m going to go for it!

Look out Wrightsville Beach, here I come!

Looking forward to Wrightsville Beach

This winter is on my last nerve!  Anybody feel the same way?  Everyday I find myself dreaming of sunny, warm days.  I’ve been thinking about escaping, but all I’ve been able to do is to escape in my mind.  Luckily, I have my third marathon of the year just four weeks from tomorrow.

The Quintiles Wrightsville Beach Marathon is like 28 days and 15 hours away.  Yep, counting down the days and hours.  This race has great reviews, from starting line festivities and music, right down to the shirts and family friendly environment.  This will be my first time running there, and I am really looking forward to it.  A flat, fast course down at the beach here in North Carolina.

My sister is getting married nearby that weekend, so that is why I had to choose this particular event.

I haven’t run once since my marathon a week ago.  Resting my legs before hitting the road again.  I hope to be back out on the pavement tomorrow, and will gradually build over the next month for this race.

Have any of you run this race, and have any comments?
